Sigmund Freud on illusions

"Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces."

This made me chuckle. Joe Tripodi, chief marketing officer of Allstate, criticized corporate marketing executives at the Association of National Advertisers conference for trying too hard to placate top management rather than convincing them that the new media landscape demanded dramatic new strategies for marketing communications.

"We can not, as a marketing discipline, as a serious function in corporations, continue to offer up a lot of bs to senior management and think that we are going to build credibility," he said. "We are in a time of unprecedented change. It's time to experiment."

Now the funny part. Here's the last line of his speech (view the video here):

"So I think that not believing in our own bs is really the number one sin."
